WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Mollie Tibbetts, the University of Iowa student who’s been missing since July 18, has been found dead on Tuesday.
- News of the gruesome crime being allegedly committed by an undocumented immigrant has sparked outrage against illegal immigration.
- Twenty-four-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera, from Mexico, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities have found the body of Mollie Tibbetts after an undocumented immigrant confessed to kidnapping, killing and dumping her in a cornfield.
The 20-year old college student was last seen on July 18 going for an evening jog in Brooklyn, Iowa.
Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, stated in the police affidavit that he got out of his car and started running beside Tibbetts. But when she grabbed her phone and threatened that she was going to call the police, he allegedly panicked and blacked out.
Rivera claims the next thing he remembers is “seeing her earphones on his lap and taking her bloody body out of the trunk of his car.”
“The defendant further described during the interview that he dragged Tibbetts on foot from his vehicle to a secluded location in a cornfield,” the affidavit said.
Rivera, who may also face deportation, faces life imprisonment without parole as Iowa doesn’t have the death penalty.
According to investigators, a surveillance video was used to track down the suspect. In the said video, Rivera’s car was spotted driving back and forth while Tibbetts was also seen jogging along a rural area near her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa.
Officials believe that Rivera hailed from Mexico and was illegally staying in the rural area for about four to seven years, where he had most likely seen Tibbetts jogging in the past.
The news of the highly publicized and gruesome crime being allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant immediately drew outrage.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, declared: “We are angry that a broken immigration system allowed a predator like this to live in our community, and we will do all we can to bring justice to Mollie’s killer.”
The arrest is likely to spark a further crackdown on illegal immigration, which President Donald Trump has made a core policy in his administration.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that a federal immigration detainer has been lodged for Rivera after his arrest, subjecting him to deportation.
Tibbetts was a psychology major who would have started her junior year this week in the University of Iowa.
