WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- President Trump voiced his criticisms against the Democrats following a House vote on a resolution that sought to limit his war powers against Iran.
- The resolution dictates that future military action against Iran would require a declaration of war by Congress, with the exception of “an imminent armed attack”.
- The president mocked the Democrats and explained that his administration had to act quickly to stop Gen. Qassem Soleimani and “didn’t have time to call up Nancy”.
President Trump took to one of his campaign rallies to voice his criticisms against the Democrats, following a House vote on a resolution that sought to limit his war powers against Iran.
The resolution, which also sought to cease military operations against Iran, was passed with a vote of 224 to 194 — mostly along party lines.
Trump mocked the resolution at a rally at Toledo’s Huntington Center: “You should get permission from Congress. You should tell us what you’re going to do so we can call up the fake news and we can leak it.”
The vote was conducted following Trump’s decision to approve a U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, further heightening tensions between the two countries.
The resolution’s terms are consistent with the requirements stated in the War Powers Resolution.
The resolution dictates that future military action against Iran would require a declaration of war by Congress, unless “such use of the Armed Forces is necessary and appropriate to defend against an imminent armed attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its Armed Forces.”
The administration has previously justified the attack against Soleimani as a preventative measure against an “imminent” attack but has provided few details.
Trump reiterated this view to nearly 8,000 of his supporters in the rally, explaining, “[Soleimani] was looking very seriously at our embassies and not just the embassy in Baghdad, but we stopped him very quickly and we stopped him cold.”
Trump added, “We didn’t have time to call up Nancy [Pelosi], who is not operating with a full deck.”
He then mocked Rep. Adam Schiff, the head of the House Intelligence Committee who managed the impeachment investigation, saying, “He buys the smallest shirt collar you can get and it’s loose.”
Trump also slammed Sen. Bernie Sanders, saying, “Crazy Bernie has condemned the U.S. military strike on Soleimani, the world’s top terrorist.”
Several Democrats have argued that Trump’s actions only brought the U.S. to the brink of war with Iran.
The resolution does not require the president’s signature, but its fate is still uncertain — it will still need to go through the Senate. While the Senate is scheduled to take up its own war powers resolution next week, Trump would be required to wind down military action in Iran in 30 days unless authorized by Congress.
