WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- President Donald Trump criticized the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who questioned Attorney General William Barr during a Senate hearing on Wednesday on the findings of Robert Mueller’s investigation.
- Trump slammed the lawmakers for acting like “lunatics” during the hearing and calls Sen. Kamala Harris ‘very nasty.’
- On the other hand, the president praised Barr’s performance, saying “he did a fantastic job” and those who are calling for his resignation only want “political points” because they’re running for office.
President Donald Trump praised Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday, saying that he did a “fantastic” job testifying in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Barr faced the panel for the first time since the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report.
“He did a fantastic job today I am told,” the president said via phone on Fox Business’ “Trish Regan Primetime.” “I got to see some of it. He did a fantastic job.”
Meanwhile, Trump accused the three 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who questioned Barr of acting like “lunatics” during the Senate hearing.
“You have three of them running against me and they are up there ranting and raving. Like lunatics, frankly. How is that fair?” he said.
Trump was also asked to comment about calls from Democratic lawmakers for Barr’s resignation.
The president said that he hasn’t heard of it yet, saying “It is so ridiculous, he is an outstanding man . . . I heard he really performed incredibly well today.”
Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris is one of the White House hopefuls calling for Barr to step down. She grilled the attorney general during the hearing.
“She was probably very nasty,” Trump said about Harris.
He also accused the California senator and other presidential contenders, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who also questioned Barr, of “trying to score political points.”
“So you have Bill Barr, highly respected, great attorney general and he has to take the abuse from people that are running for office,” Trump said. “They don’t care about this, they’re just looking for political points. And I really think the American people see through it so easily.”
According to the president, a possible presidential race against former Vice President Joe Biden “would make four years ago look like baby stuff.”
