- Around 78,000 people worldwide are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19, including 76,288 in China.
President Donald Trump was displeased about the return of 14 COVID-19 positive Americans without his permission instead of remaining in quarantine overseas, complaining that the reentry of those infected potentially undermines the administration’s response to the global health outbreak.
In the briefing for President Trump apropos U.S. passengers quarantined for weeks aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship detailed that healthy passengers would be flown back to the country on two chartered planes while those infected with the coronavirus wound remain in Japan under quarantine in order to prevent the transmission of the deadly virus.
Trump became “furious” with senior advisers according to The Washington Post. This was upon learning that the 14 infected Americans traveled alongside healthy passengers. One official said that it was a “big operational mistake” not to inform the president of the decision prior to the scheduled departure.
Fourteen Americans showing no symptoms evacuated from the ship had tested positive for COVID-19. U.S. officials have received these results, but have made the decision to fly the Americans back to the country. The patients were kept isolated from other passengers on the plane.
The State Department and Department of Health and Human Services issued a joint statement on Monday, saying “These individuals were moved in the most expeditious and safe manner to a specialized containment area on the evacuation aircraft to isolate them in accordance with standard protocol.”
“After consultation with HHS officials … the State Department made the decision to allow the 14 individuals, who were in isolation, separated from other passengers, and continued to be asymptomatic, to remain on the aircraft to complete the evacuation process.”
The infected passengers were subjects for quarantining procedures and medical care upon their arrival in the United States.
“Every precaution to ensure proper isolation and community protection measures are being taken, driven by the most up-to-date risk assessments by U.S. health authorities,” State and HHS officials said.
