After former President Barack Obama criticized his handling of the coronavirus crisis, President Donald Trump on Sunday fired back and said that the former president was “grossly incompetent.” Obama’s remarks came during two commencements speeches on Saturday.
Trump said that “he didn’t hear” Obama’s remarks when asked by reporters on the White House lawn, then continued with “Look, he was an incompetent president,” Trump said. “That’s all I can say. Grossly incompetent.”
The White House did not immediately give a comment when asked by the Huffington Post. It is not confirmed if Trump was referring to a particular incident regarding his allegation.
On Saturday, Obama delivered two virtual commencement speeches. The first address was for graduates of historically black colleges and universities, and primetime special for high school seniors hours later.
“This pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing… A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge,” Obama said during his first speech.
“Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy — that’s how little kids think,” Obama said in his second speech. He also took aim at “so-called grown-ups” with “fancy titles” who have “screwed up” the nation.
“Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way — which is why things are so screwed up. I hope that instead, you decide to ground yourself in values that last, like honesty, hard work, responsibility, fairness, generosity, respect for others.”
Many viewers perceived Obama’s comments as a discreet attack on Trump’s management.
Until recently, Obama is largely silent on his criticisms against Trump. But earlier this month, he reportedly lambasted the current administration’s handling of the pandemic as “an absolute chaotic disaster” during a phone discussion with some of his former White House aides.
