Members of the MS-13 gang in Los Angeles were charged with the “medieval-style” slayings of seven people, including cutting the heart out of a rival gang member.
An MS-13 group in the San Fernando Valley area is the target of the federal RICO indictment with the murder charges. The indictment also spells out other violent acts prosecutors say were committed on behalf of the notorious transnational gang.
President Donald Trump has condemned the gang for its deliberate violence in New York and other places.
Los Angeles U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna announced the indictment against 22 individuals. He credited the collaborative effort of the law enforcement in solving several murder cases and dealing “a severe blow to members of the gang who engaged in acts of brutality not seen in the region for over 20 years.”
“Taking violent offenders off the street should send a message to MS-13 members and their associates that medieval-style violence and senseless murder will not be tolerated in Los Angeles,” said Paul Delacourt, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office.
Photos showing MS-13 members posing with a machete, gang signs and guns were released by Hanna’s office.
A certain “J.S.” was identified as the victim whose heart was cut out. The indictment claimed he was driven to Angeles National Forest on March 6, 2017. According to prosecutors, MS-13 suspected he’d crossed out MS-13 graffiti. Six MS-13 gang members attacked him in the national forest with a machete and killed him.
“The victim was dismembered and his body parts were thrown into a canyon after one of the defendants allegedly cut the heart out of the victim’s body,” a news release from Hanna’s office said.
According to Fox 11 Los Angeles, the other six MS-13 victims were members of its rival gang, suspected snitches and a homeless man who lives in a park the gang claimed as its territory.
Four of the murders occurred in Angeles National Forest. Machetes, bats and knives were used in all the killings, the indictment said.
The Patch news outlet reported that three individuals identified in the indictment were arrested in the past few days in the Los Angeles area, while a fourth suspect was arrested in Oakland over the weekend.
