WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- President Donald Trump attacked a group of ‘Progressive’ Democratic congresswomen on Twitter, telling them to go back to the “broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”
- Though the president did not name the congresswomen, he was almost certainly referring to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, ignoring the fact that all but Omar was born in the U.S.
- While Trump defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday, saying “She is not a racist,” Pelosi rebuked him for his tweets, saying, he wants to “make America white again.”
On Sunday, President Donald Trump attacked a group of Democratic congresswomen that they should go back to the “broken and crime-infested places from which they came,” without acknowledging the fact that these women of color are American citizens.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who rebuked Trump for his tweets, said the president wants to “make America white again.” Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, a Republican who recently announced he is leaving his party, called Trump’s remarks “racist and disgusting.”
While Trump did not name the congresswomen, he was almost certainly referring to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts — known as ‘the Squad.’ All of them were born in the U.S. except for Omar who was born in Somalia.
With his tweets, Trump again involved himself into a feud between the House Speaker and the liberal congresswomen, after offering an unsolicited defense of Pelosi days earlier. Pelosi has been trying to minimize Ocasio-Cortez’s influence in recent days, prompting the freshman congresswoman to accuse the Speaker of trying to single out women of color.
“She is not a racist,” Trump said Friday.
“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump tweeted on Sunday. “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”
He added: “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
Ocasio-Cortez has Puerto Rican descent but she was born in the Bronx, New York while Pressly was born in Cincinnati.
Omar, who was born in Somali, immigrated to the United States at age 12 and eventually settled with her family in Minneapolis.
