Kathy Zhu loses Miss Michigan title because of ‘racist’ tweets

  • Miss Michigan Kathy Zhu has lost her title after pageant officials deemed her social media posts ‘offensive, insensitive and inappropriate.’
  • Her tweets, posted in 2017 and 2018, detail her ‘refusal to try on a hijab in 2018’ and her take on ‘black on black gun violence.’
  • Zhu, an avid Trump supporter, claimed that she was discriminated against for her conservative political views.

Miss Michigan Kathy Zhu has been stripped of her title after several “insensitive” and “racist” tweets surfaced.

The pageant officials sent an official notice to the 20-year-old via email on Friday.

“It has been brought to the attention of Miss World America (MWA) that your social media accounts contain offensive, insensitive and inappropriate content,” the notice read.

The notice explained that Zhu’s social media behavior violates the “contestant requirement” of “being in good character.”

It concluded that MWA no longer recognizes Zhu “as a participant of any sort or in any capacity.”

The social media posts in question, which were tweeted in 2017 and 2018, were targeted at Muslim women and the black community.

The posts have since been deleted but screenshots were obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

The first tweet read, “There is a ‘try a hijab on’ booth at my college campus. So you’re telling me that it’s now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?”

The second tweet stated, “Did you know that the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community first before blaming others.”

Zhu’s tweets received backlash but she still stands by them.

She posted a video response via Twitter on Friday, claiming that she was discriminated against for her conservative political views.

Zhu declared, “Little attacks like those really, really diminishes the value and the truth of the word, ‘racism.’”

Zhu is currently a political science major at the University of Michigan. She openly supports President Donald Trump on social media and is the vice president of her school’s College Republicans group.

She tweeted on Friday, “I am glad this story came to light because this is more than just some beauty pageant, this is about the prejudice views against people with ‘different opinions.’”

Zhu will no longer represent the state of Michigan in the Miss World America pageant in Las Vegas.
