British Fighter Jets Intercept Russian Bombers Ignoring Air Traffic Control Calls

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Two Russian nuclear-capable bombers, suspiciously ignoring a series of radio calls from the British air traffic control, were intercepted by Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets.
  • According to the UK’s Ministry Of Defense, the Russian bombers hovered the British coastline on Thursday.
  • British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson said that they will continue defending the British skies from anyone demonstrating aggression towards the nation.

On Thursday, a pair of Russian Tu-160 bombers were stopped by Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets. The United Kingdom’s Ministry Of Defense stated that the Russian aircrafts repeatedly ignored air traffic control while they bordered along the British coastline.

British Defense Secretary, Gavin Williamson said, “Russian bombers probing U.K. airspace is another reminder of the very serious military challenge that Russia poses us today.”

Based on a radar image taken from airlive.net, the bombers moved towards British airspace off the coast of Newcastle. The British military’s Royal Air Force fighter jets, which were based in Scotland, where launched to commence with the interception along with a French jet and a tanker plane.

Secretary Williamson added, “We will not hesitate to continually defend our skies from acts of aggression. Once again the rapid reactions of our RAF have demonstrated how vital our Armed Forces are in protecting Britain.”

There have already been two incidents this September in which Russian bombers have been intercepted by NATO aircraft; both took place in the U.S. on September 1 and September 11. What happened in the UK is the third incident this month.

“I think anytime that we see these kinds of events there is a strategic message as part of that and that’s part of the broader geo-political situation that we find ourselves in these days,” said the head of North American Aerospace Defense Command, General Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy.

The interview happened during the Pentagon news conference this week, in which O’Shaughnessy made no comment when he was questioned whether he got furious about the recent September 11 flight of Russian bombers off the United States. However, he added that they were prepared and responded appropriately during the incident.

A spokesman from NORAD stated that it has already been three times this year that Russians have flown nuclear-capable bombers off Alaska.
