WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- Nineteen more COVID-19 cases have been recorded today in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- The sudden jump of infected patients caused the American people to panic which resulted in discrimination against Asians.
- A group of dancers called Shen Yun is one of the many victims of said discrimination.
The number of COVID-19 cases today in the United States went up to 53 from 34 on February 21, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This is in the midst of the Diamond Princess cruise ship situation where more passengers tested positive of the virus. Docked in Yokohama, Japan, the virus has spread rapidly among the 695 who are on board the ship, with at least two deaths. The ship was compelled into quarantine and isolation. With local officials across the country, the U.S. State Department has since allowed their citizens to go back to the USA. Other countries did the same.
While a huge portion of worldwide cases are in China where the virus has evidently come from, the Americans could not help but panic, mostly for those who do not have universal healthcare. A man from Miami, Florida who was diagnosed with COVID-19, has to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills.
The panic has also caused bullying and discrimination against people of Asian descent. One of those who suffered from discrimination is the US-based dance troupe, Shen Yun. They are popular for performing traditional Chinese dances and are scheduled to perform in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 25, and 26. But the residents are worried that they might be contagious.
Their concern is following a rumor on social media that the group had performed in Korea and some members returned with the symptoms, but their leader has said to have prevented them from seeking medical help. They are said to forbid the members to spread the news so their performance schedule will continue as planned.
But the spokesman for the Salt Lake City health department, Nicholas Rupp, said that since Shen Yun only tours around North America, there would be no likelihood of the group to have come across COVID-19 patients. The claims about Shen Yun have no basis since there’s no evidence.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, he said, “We’ve investigated, and we have no reason to believe that anyone associated with the troupe is ill”.
